The University of Bedfordshire was Cradled in 2006 following the merger between the University of Luton and De Montfort University, which is named after Simon de Montfort, which Prior to 1992 was known as Leicester Polytechnic. It had been created in 1969 through the amalgamation of Leicester College of Technology and Leicester College of Art.

The University of Luton was a university based in Luton, the largest town in Bedfordshire. The institution was founded as the Modern School in the 1890s. It became Luton College of Higher Education with the merger of Luton College of Technology and Putteridge Bury College of Education in the mid-seventies. With the passing of the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992 it converted to university status in 1993.

The University of Bedfordshire has been awarded top marks – a ‘confidence’ rating – in a recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) audit 2009, which checks how UK universities maintain their own academic standards and quality. Over the past for years University of Bedfordshire has completed £51million investment in its campuses.

In the Government’s recent UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, much of our research was described as 'world-leading' and of 'international significance'.
